To some degree, life is predictable. Its ebbs and flows are rhythmic and cyclical—from day and night to growth and decline. Adapting to this balance, we strive for long-term stability and absolute certainty. But in reality, instability is threaded throughout life’s natural order. Unexpected events can occur at any time, and regardless of how well we plan and prepare, the future is uncertain.
My sister, Samantha, was born with an incurable spinal cord disorder—a condition impacting her physical development and mobility from an early age—and now her 3-year-old daughter, Scarlett, is facing a rare form of brain cancer.
In her 32 years, Samantha has navigated the complexities of living with a disability, enduring numerous surgeries, extensive rehabilitation, and psychological distress. Despite this—she has defied medical predictions and overcome physical limitations. She has cultivated an inner strength, resilience, and determination to persevere.
Fighting has become a way of life for her.
Now, after years of life-shaping challenges, she is imparting her gift of strength to Scarlett as she battles cancer, and their bond as mother and daughter is growing even stronger.
My sister has been Scarlett’s fiercest advocate. She has held her through harsh treatments and medical procedures, unpredictable side effects, and extended hospital stays. Yielding her plans and desires—she has remained present and unwavering in her commitment to her daughter’s healing. She has fought remarkably to protect and preserve Scarlett’s childhood joy and innocence.
She has embraced Scarlett’s vulnerability as they deepen their connection through shared challenges and understanding. Every ache, pain, poke, and prod evokes an immediate response within my sister, akin to a mirror touch—a sign of her deep empathy and their interconnectedness.
Enduring periods of isolation, they have fostered collective hope and resilience, easing the discomfort associated with prolonged solitude and nurturing a more meaningful sense of togetherness.
Their bond, at times, transcends outside perception. The unspoken gestures, affectionate touches, and subtle smiles they exchange rend the heart and convey more love and compassion than words ever could—and fill the air with comforting warmth and tenderness.
And every moment—even the unbearable—is cherished as precious.
Through unavoidable hardships, we experience the raw, intangible beauty of human love. It is in our suffering that we find profound moments of vulnerability, connection, and empathy—tools that, by God’s design, create intimacy between us and reflect His intimate love for us.
Romans 8:38-39 tells us that nothing can separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus. Nothing. His love is constant, unwavering, and unconditional—visible in my sister’s love for her daughter. With Christ as our forerunner, we are more than conquerors. His love equips us to cope with future uncertainties, endure pain and suffering, and stand firm in the face of life’s challenges—all with the assurance that we have victory through His love and grace.
