In a recent meeting that extended far beyond its initial 30-minute duration, sisters Maire and Therese Forkin shared the essence of their bespoke couture designs. What began as a short discussion turned into a deep dive into the world of timeless fashion, elegant craftsmanship, and the meaning of personal style. With an impressive legacy in tailoring and couture, the Forkin sisters embody a level of personal integrity and style that transcends fleeting trends.

Their approach to fashion is about creating beautiful garments that elevate the wearer, making them feel confident, chic, and effortlessly sophisticated.

Maire, a graduate in Fashion Design from the Limerick College of Art and Design, refined her expertise by completing Fashion Tailoring at the renowned London College of Fashion. She began her career designing for high street retailers before transitioning to bespoke tailoring to companies in Savile Row, where she worked with high-profile clients and some members of the Royal family.

 

Meanwhile, her sister Therese, a graduate in Communications & Marketing from the University of Ireland, oversees the business operations, ensuring the seamless management and continued success of their design house.

 “Our speciality is crafting the 'total look’," explains Maire. "For events like family weddings, black-tie galas, or any special occasion, we believe that the entire appearance matters.

 

Our signature styles feature understated elegance, with clean lines and bold statements that don’t require excessive adornment. A well-designed headpiece, paired with carefully chosen shoes and accessories, completes our signature looks and ensures you stand out with effortless grace.”

Each bespoke garment is designed with longevity in mind. When creating a couture piece, they take into account not just the season or the event, but the future. How will the piece continue to serve the client in years to come? Can it be styled for different occasions? Will it remain relevant in a changing fashion landscape? These are the questions they ask themselves when crafting every piece, ensuring that clients can create a curated wardrobe full of versatile, high-quality garments.

 

Craftsmanship & Attention to Detail

Maire is passionate about the craftsmanship that goes into every garment. The process begins with a detailed consultation, where each client’s needs, preferences, and vision are discussed. The focus then shifts to the fitting, where the silhouette is carefully considered. She works with the client to assess each client from every angle – front, back, and side – to create the most flattering and tailored fit that celebrates the individual's best features.

“At this stage, clients truly experience the care and attention that goes into their bespoke piece,” Maire shares. “The process involves creating exclusive patterns tailored to their unique measurements, ensuring the garment will highlight their best featured.”

Achieving the perfect silhouette is key to the design process, and often requires making a special pattern for the clients. This meticulous process takes time, as each garment is handcrafted from the finest French and Italian silks and wools. The result is a garment that fits perfectly and moves beautifully with the wearer.

Maire Forkin Designs' upcoming collections brings a sophisticated, fresh perspective to classic couture. The sisters’ studios are nestled in two locations: South Dublin and the West of Ireland, County Mayo. Their bespoke service invites clients to experience the luxury of couture, tailored specifically to their body and style, combining modern design with classic elegance.

 

They also meet with some of their clients over zoom for the initial consultation and in some cases to provide the end-to-end design process, a service that they made available to US and Canadian clients through Covid.
