Social media buzz often touts hot lemon water as a miracle elixir, claiming benefits like improved hydration, digestion
Social media buzz often touts hot lemon water as a miracle elixir, claiming benefits like improved hydration, digestion, immunity, and weight loss. But experts caution against believing the hype. While hydrating first thing in the morning is undeniably beneficial, nutrition professor Emily Ho from Oregon State University says there’s nothing inherently special about adding lemon to your water. Any fluid, including regular water or herbal tea, can keep your body hydrated and support essential functions like maintaining body temperature and lubricating joints.
The claims around digestion and immunity are similarly overstated. Lemons, rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, do offer benefits such as reducing inflammation, supporting cardiovascular health, and promoting collagen synthesis for skin elasticity. However, the specific effects of drinking lemon water on digestion remain inconclusive. While the citric acid in lemons may help some older adults with lower stomach acid levels, the impact is minimal. Similarly, while vitamin C bolsters immune function, research shows consuming more won’t “supercharge” immunity.
For weight loss, the benefits of hot lemon water lie in its potential to replace higher-calorie beverages, but it doesn’t directly burn fat or boost metabolism. Beyond the drink, lemons shine in other areas, offering uses as natural cleaning agents and skin care aids due to their antibacterial properties. With these versatile benefits, lemons are a healthy addition to your routine—but not the cure-all influencers might claim.
